The Nizami city has always been a flagbearer for sports in India.
This city has a new feather in its cap – Hyderabad FC, an Indian professional football club representing the city in the Hero Indian Super League. It came into the spotlight on 27 August 2019, when Mr. Varun Tripuraneni and Mr. Vijay Madduri acquired the franchise.
Mr. Varun Tripuraneni is the former CEO of Kerala Blasters and the former COO of Chennaiyin F.C. while Mr. Vijay Madduri is a Hyderabad based tech entrepreneur. Another co-owner of the team is the businessman and actor Mr. Rana Daggubati, whose passion for sports needs no introduction. He truly believes in the game of football and having him on board with Hyderabad F.C. will help boost the sport in Hyderabad.
Mr. Rana Daggubati, Mr. Varun Tripuraneni and Mr. Vijay Madduri are all proud and excited to create a legacy with the team in the world of football and to regain the pride of Hyderabad, a city with a strong past in the sport.
The year 1939 marked the formation of the ‘Hyderabad Football Association’ which cradled immense talent and excellent players. The team to look out for during the Nizam’s reign was the ‘City Afghans’, later known as ‘Hyderabad City Police’. The team bagged a series of achievements in the pre-independence era making their phenomenal win in 1943 in the ‘Ashe Gold Cup’ final against Bengaluru.
Speaking of history and winning, the late Syed Abdul Rahim is hailed as the architect of the ‘Golden Age’ of Indian football. Applauded among the best coaches till date, he was a gift from Hyderabad to Indian football. He steered and shaped the ‘Hyderabad City Police’ from 1951-1963 and also coached the Indian National team to win the gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games. After this era, Hyderabad’s football journey came to a halt.
Having made their debut in the 2019-20 edition of the Indian Super League, Hyderabad FC, appointed Manolo Marquez as the Head Coach in August 2020. The Spaniard took over the side and revitalized a young HFC squad that entertained their way to 5th place in the 2020-21 ISL table, narrowly missing out on their maiden appearance in the knockout phase.
At the end of this exciting campaign, six youngsters from the squad at Hyderabad FC were called up for the Indian National Team as the club made history as the most represented team in the Blue Tigers’ squad.
