‘What is important is how pick yourself up after a loss’

Odei Onaindia speaks about his time at Hyderabad FC, the ISL campaign and more…

Hyderabad FC defender Odei Onaindia has been one of the most consistent players for Hyderabad FC so far this season. He has played every minute of the campaign for Manolo Marquez’s side and has put in solid performances at the back, alongside Chinglensana Singh, forming a strong partnership for Hyderabad.

He spoke to our website in an exclusive, as he opened up about the experience of playing in India, his playing style, the squad at HFC and more…

On his experience of the Indian Super League…

The Indian Super League is fast growing into one of the most exciting competitions in the world and that is what brought me here. At Hyderabad FC, I have met a spectacular group of people and though this has been a strange season, it has all been positive so far for everyone involved.

On training under Manolo Marquez…

Manolo is a great coach, who is happy to work with every player individually and we as a team have faith in what he does. He was clear about the style he wants to play right from the beginning and we are happy that we are able to adapt to what he asks of us.

On the discipline he has shown at the back for HFC…

I have never been a defender who makes too many fouls, nor have I picked up too many bookings in my career. I believe that you don’t need to be aggressive and make fouls to be a good defender, that is not my style of play.

On standing as one of the best passers in the league…

I am a calm player. I like to have the ball at my feet and I usually look to make a simple pass and keep the ball rolling. If you have the ball and keep it well, it makes the opponents run after it to recover possession, and that helps a lot over a 90-minute game.

On the recent results…

We had to be on the losing end someday. But what is important is how pick yourself up after a loss. I don’t think we need to change too many things in this moment. We just need to fix our mistakes and prepare as best as we can for the next game.

On the busy schedule up ahead…

Every game is important so we have to train hard every day, which makes it a bit tough to maintain our fitness. Most teams have a similar problem in the ISL this season so all we can do is stay prepared for what is ahead of us.

On missing players through injuries and the youngsters stepping up…

Everyone at the club is committed to learning and improving in every training session. We miss the experienced players on the field but the youngsters at the club have stepped up and proven themselves. Our togetherness is the strength of our club. Here, each of us contribute our own grain of sand in search of success.
