Talking Points #HFCNEU

Indian Super League, Round 16

The much-awaited contest between Hyderabad FC and NorthEast United FC ended in a goalless draw at Tilak Maidan on Sunday. Here are a few talking points from the game that ended in a goalless draw in Vasco.

Unbeaten run continues

On an unbeaten run of eight games, Hyderabad FC have shown strong character in each match despite the absence of key foreign players like Joel Chianese, Joao Victor and Fran Sandaza at different points during this stretch. The compatibility amongst the players on and off the field has been crucial to the team’s undefeated run. It has translated into robust and all-round performances on the field. Manolo Marquez and his men will look to maintain this impressive when they face SC East Bengal on Friday.

Approach to the game

Hyderabad came into the game after a week-long break as opposed to NorthEast who played against Goa three days prior to the game. Despite dominating possession and frequently sending crosses in the box, Hyderabad FC looked hesitant in transitional attacks which could be attributed to the sudden, increased gap between games after a hectic January with seven games.

The difference in break duration was reflected in NEUFC’s vigour in the attacking third but the absence of a few key players restricted their flair in attack. While both sides controlled different aspects of the games well, the teams took an overall cautious approach due to their respective shortcomings which led to a stalemate in a game that could have easily had goals on the scorecard.

Strong defensive show

Keeping their fourth clean sheet in six games, Hyderabad’s backline put on another resilient defensive display against NEUFC on Sunday. Akash Mishra and Asish Rai were on top of their usual game by winning most of the duels in the back and contributing in the front with threatening crosses from either flank. Showing maturity and leadership in the centre, Odei Onaindia and Chinglensana Singh held the fort through timely interceptions and clearances.  Making some of the most crucial saves on the night, HFC custodian, Lakshmikant Kattimani stood strong as well, as he negated attacking threats till the final whistle on Sunday.

Stay in contention

While a positive result would have opened up a cushion in the race to the top-4 for both sides, the draw meant that both teams are still in contention for qualification. Since the margin of points between clubs is becoming narrower in the final leg of the league, it will be important for teams to turn such games into wins, which could go a long way in pushing them into the playoff spots.
