Hyderabad fall to unlucky defeat in Kolkata

HFC fail to score for the second game running; lose 1-0 to the Mariners

Kolkata: Manolo Marquez’s Hyderabad FC fell to what was just their second defeat of the 2022-23 Indian Super League season, after a tough night against ATK Mohun Bagan, at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Saturday.

Hugo Boumous’ 11th-minute tap-in from close range was the difference between the two sides as the Mariners registered their fourth victory of the season. HFC remain 2nd in the league table but have now lost consecutive games without getting on the score sheet.

HFC Head Coach Manolo Marquez was forced into a couple of changes and his side took time to get a grip of the game after the first whistle. The pace of Manvir Singh, Liston Colaco and Ashiqiue Kuriniyan, along with the guile of Hugo Boumous, was too hot to handle for the men in Yellow and Black early in the game.

And it took just 11 minutes for Boumous to find the back of the net after Kuriniyan set him up with a tap-in. And ever since, Hyderabad tried hard to get back into the game, pushing the ATKMB backline right till the end.

Bartholomew Ogbeche and Borja Herrera had their half-chances while Javi Siverio, Halicharan Narzary and Joel Chianese also came close but at the end, there was just a single goal that separated the two sides on the night.

The hosts played smart and controlled the tempo of the game, taking their time with every stoppage, and getting away with it, even without a booking. The game got a bit rough in the midfield, and could have ended another way, as Hyderabad were denied a clear penalty shout right at the death.

But it was a night where not much went right for Manolo’s men, who stay put on 16 points after eight league games.

Hyderabad FC are back in action when they take on Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Saturday, December 3.
