As Hyderabad FC gear up to host Jamshedpur FC in their first ‘Home’ game of the 2020-21 Indian Super League, we take a quick look at the squads, the opponents’ form and the key players to look out for.

Opponent Coach

Jamshedpur FC brought in Owen Coyle as head coach ahead of the 2020-21 ISL season. This campaign will mark his second season in the league having joined Chennaiyin FC in November last season. Back then, he sparked a turnaround for the team that went from being placed in the bottom half of the table to becoming runners up of ISL 2019-20.

Coyle is known for his attacking football and his vast experience will bring strength to Jamshedpur FC’s style of play.

Squad

The Red Miners have retained their core group of players while signing noteworthy names like Nerijus Valskis, Peter Hartley, Nicholas Fitzgerald, Jackichand Singh, Laldinliana Renthlei and more to add depth to the squad. Coyle coached Valskis and Renthlei at Chennaiyin and both players flourished under his management. Their understanding of each other’s technique will be crucial to Jamshedpur’s performance.

Hyderabad’s numero-uno Subrata Paul, spent three seasons with Jamshedpur before making the switch to HFC this season. He has led the defence that kept consecutive clean sheets and will be crucial on Wednesday.

Form

Coyle’s men lost 2-1 against Chennaiyin in their opening game, and drew 2-2 with Odisha FC on Sunday. The team started both matches positively and showed serious intent to score throughout the game. With glimpses of good possessional play from Jamshedpur FC, we can expect a similar battle between the two teams that could make this game a nail-biting contest.

With Valskis leading their attack, the Red Miners will look to use their pace and strength in the final third, which could be a test for our backline.

Key men

Nerijus Valskis (JFC)

The 2019-20 season Golden Boot winner, Valskis, opened his account for the season with a goal against Chennaiyin before scoring a brace against Odisha FC. He is precise in converting chances and is also effective with his pressing of the opposition’s backline. Currently atop the goal scorers list this season, Valskis will be keen to keep his scoring momentum going and could cause problems in our half.

Jackichand Singh (JFC)

A top-rated Indian winger, Jackichand has made an impact by providing the right support to Valskis. His pin-point crosses, blistering pace and ball control has kept defenders on their toes this season. His clash with our defence will make for an exciting watch.

Laldinliana Renthlei (JFC)

The 22-year-old defender played a key role in Chennai’s performance last season. He was recognized as one of the top right-backs in ISL. Apart from strengthening Jamshedpur’s defence, Renthlei could also pose a threat to Hyderabad with his long passes to JFC’s attackers.

Chinglesana Singh (HFC)

Sana started his campaign with an impactful defensive performance that won him the ‘Hero of the Match’ award against Bengaluru FC on his debut. He intercepted dangerous crosses, shielded the ball well and ensured smooth passing around the field. Sana could be a tough barrier for the Red Miners to get through on Wednesday.

Joao Victor (HFC)

Joao Victor’s presence in the side has added solidity to Hyderabad’s midfield. He regulated distribution of the ball around the field effectively throughout the games against Odisha and Bengaluru, and was immense with his presence after back-to-back injury scares for HFC. His ability to break up opposition play and control proceedings with decisive forward passes will play a crucial role for us.

Odei Onaindia (HFC)

A composed defender, Odei has been a rock in our backline, rarely losing possession of the ball. His defensive stats seem to improve with every game. The Spaniard registered a 96% pass accuracy against Bengaluru. His resilience in defence will for sure help us in holding back Jamshedpur’s attack, and also allow Marquez’s men to control the game.
